Alexander Litvinenko, is an ex-KGB colonel, and FSB lieutenant-colonel. He was born in the Russian city of Voronezh.
On 1 November 2000, he emigrated to the United Kingdom, claiming political asylum, and in October 2006 he became a British citizen. He has extensively criticised the regime of President Vladimir Putin, particularly its position on Chechnya. One of the highest-profile defectors from the FSB, he is on the wanted list in Moscow.
